RIGHT TIME, WRONG RACE - NO FINAL.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

Caitlin Fitzgerald from Highland of Palmdale was among the breakthrough runners of the year, arguably second in that category only to teammate Alyssa Craft.

But you won't see Fitzgerald at the Southern Section finals Saturday morning at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. SAC; pronounced as the word "sack") is a community college located in the Los Angeles suburb of Walnut, California, next to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona which is just over a hill.

The sophomore cross country runner finished among the top 20 finishers overall - in 18 minutes, 29 seconds - at last weekend's Southern Section Div. I preliminaries. Hers was the 11th-fastest time for an individual whose team did not qualify.

Fitzgerald ran in one of the most competitive heats of the day, against top teams such as Fountain Valley Fountain Valley, city (1990 pop. 53,691), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1957. Chiefly residential, Fountain Valley also has diverse manufactures, including apparel, computer equipment, semiconductors, and medical equipment. A U.S. navy helicopter facility is there.  and Dana Hills of Dana Point and with individuals such as Craft and Simi Valley's Anna Sperry. She finished seventh in the race, one spot out of qualifying for the finals.

In any other heat, she would have finished no worse than second.

``I'm going to write a letter to CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  and see if they can come up with some sort of equitable way to qualify,'' coach John Johnstone For the baseball player, see .

said. ``To see if they can have an at-large time. If they break 18:30 or 18:35, then they automatically qualify. It's unfair that somebody can run 45 seconds slower, and she qualifies.

There is no way an at-large time could be implemented retroactively. Highland would need to propose an initiative to its Golden League representative, Palmdale athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Gary Phelps, who would bring it to the section's Council of Representatives, which meets in January. If approved, the rule would go on the books for next school year.

--City's top dog: It's only been three months, but Monroe of North Hills cross country runner Gabriel Guzman knows how it feels to have all eyes on him.

``There's no pressure where nobody is running right with you, but at the same time you feel everyone is looking at you,'' Guzman said. ``Any bad race, you get the bad publicity.''

Guzman has had good news to report lately. He ran a City-best 15:39 at last week's City Section preliminaries at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

, which bettered his 15:45 from two weeks earlier.

The junior has rethought his strategy after Birmingham of Lake Balboa's Taib-Brahim Mehdi, the top runner in 2003, graduated. Instead of chasing, Guzman is the one in front, usually alone.

--Rebels mighty quick: Flintridge Prep of La Canada had the most dominant preliminary race of any area team. The Rebels took five of the top 10 spots and six of the top 11 in their Div. V heat.

--Marmonte muscle: The boys' and girls' teams from Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Thousand Oaks, led by senior Michael Fabregas (15:31) at the prelims, finished third in their Div. I heat.

Westlake runs in the Div. II final, with favorite Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , in the day's first race, at 7:45 a.m.
