RIGHETTI IN WESTLAKE SIGHTS; WARRIORS HOPE PASSING GAME PLAYS WELL ON THE : WESTLAKE AT RIGHETTI, 7:30 P.M.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

It was a short Thanksgiving holiday for the Westlake High School Westlake High School may refer to:

football team. For that, the Warriors are extremely thankful.

Instead of turkey with all the trimmings Thursday, Westlake ate a little and practiced a little. And while friends enjoy a day off today, the Warriors will board a bus at 1 p.m. for a two-hour-plus trip to Santa Maria Santa Maria, city, Brazil

Nobody is complaining. What might seem like an inconvenience to others is a blessing for the Warriors, who appreciate being in the Southern Section Division III

football playoffs. Tonight, they hope to extend their postseason stay with a win over Righetti in the quarterfinals.

Westlake has ample warning about Righetti (6-5), a second-place team from the Northern League. While the Warriors (8-3) were eliminating San Marcos San Marcos (săn mär`kəs).

in the opening round, Righetti was ambushing second-seeded Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  24-7.

The shocking win raised red flags throughout Westlake.

``Like everybody else, we were looking at (Crescenta Valley's) record and the fact that they were undefeated and ranked in state and figured they should win,'' Westlake coach Jim Benkert said. ``But, (after looking at the videotape), I can see why (Righetti) won. They are a big, strong, physical team.''

Benkert isn't stretching the truth. Righetti's huge offensive line is anchored by 6-foot-9, 330-pound tackle David Junod. Compared to Junod, 6-foot-4, 285-pound guard Zac Willis is on the small side.

``When I say massive, I don't just mean big,'' Benkert said. ``I mean really massive.''

Righetti's line powers an option offense that accumulated 270 yards rushing against Crescenta Valley. Quarterback Ruben Villa led the way with 88 yards on the ground.

line, Westlake counters with an explosive passing game and a running attack that has grown considerably over the last few weeks. The Warriors will get a boost with the return of standout receiver Joey Cuppari, who sat out the opening round because of a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn. .

, Westlake didn't miss a beat offensively. Travis Campbell caught 13 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Zac Wasserman completed 19 of 42 passes for 279 yards. Running back Adam LaLiberte built on his strong regular-season finish with 125 yards rushing on 12 carries.

The winner of tonight's game will face the winner between Notre Dame-Oxnard in next week's semifinals.
