Valley's first baby of the new millennium, he is the first to leave the hospital in opulent style.

Arriving at 1:45 p.m. Saturday - 13 days earlier than expected - the city blessed the 6-pound, 12-ounce boy with a bundle of gifts from 32 businesses, including a limousine ride home from the hospital Monday.

``You see people on TV winning and you go, wow, that will never be me. We never win anything,'' said William Martin William Martin can refer to:

The idea for the lavish display of generosity came from Tammy Grodt, one of the maternity nurses at Simi Valley Hospital Simi Valley Hospital (SVH) is a Seventh-day Adventist hospital located located in Simi Valley, California. SVH is a member of Adventist Health. New Construction

She posed the idea to Simi Valley businesses before Christmas and spent much of Wednesday through Friday picking up approximately $500 in donated gifts: diapers, toys, stuffed animals, food baskets, gift certificates to retail stores, a $50 savings bond Savings bond

``We saw this as any opportunity for businesses to bless this baby,'' Grodt said. ``They were very receptive. This city just loves its people. Everything was a surprise to the family. They did not know they were getting anything.''

Added Alicia Gonzalez, hospital spokeswoman: "We're honored to have this baby born at our hospital. It's such a special occasion. Having a baby is a blessing anyway. But the fact that the baby was born on Jan. 1 makes it extra special.''

stopped by the hospital Monday to present a special proclamation to the family - Meagan, the 25-year-old mother, and the couple's 2-year-old daughter Cydney Jade, or C.J.

Martin said he and his wife did not plan the pregnancy around the millennium and had no idea what lay ahead until Meagan went into labor 12 hours before giving birth.

The decision to carry the family's namesake was made six years ago, some three years before the couple even married.

``My grandpa told me a day before he died that he wanted me to keep the namesake going,'' Martin said about his grandfather's comments before his death in 1994. ``I knew long before she was pregnant that if I had a boy, I was going to name him after me.''

``The nurse said there were no other pregnant women in the hospital at the time, so it looked like this was going to be the first baby of the millennium,'' he said. ``She said they had a room full of presents to give to us. I was mainly concerned with the baby being healthy, so I wasn't really thinking about all of the other stuff. But looking back, I appreciate everything that everyone did. I feel pretty fortunate that we could have the first baby of the new millennium in Simi Valley.''
