The group was formed in 1983 by a widow of an LAPD officer and by Daryl Gates, then the LAPD chief. Last year Norlemann organized a 77-mile ride with five checkpoints. At each checkpoint, riders picked playing cards from a deck and received instructions on where to go next. At the end of the ride, participants compared cards to see who had the best and worst poker hands. Prizes were awarded for high and low hands. The ride raised almost $5,000 for its cause. This year's ride will be a 100-mile poker run. Norlemann said LAPD Interim Chief Bayan Lewis, Deputy Chief Mark Kroeker and Assistant Chief Frank Piersoll plan to attend. Once again the charity ride will start in front of Accessories Unlimited at 24508 Lyons Ave., a motorcycle shop in Newhall. Check-in time will be 8 a.m., and ride pins will be distributed to the first 500 bikers there. Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, a Santa Clarita-based rock band, will perform some of its hits, and there also will be a stunt show. Entry will be $15 per person and $25 per couple, with all proceeds to help the support group. Norlemann said he hopes to start a college scholarship fund this year for the children of slain officers. ``The plan is to put the money (raised) in an interest-earning account and give it to some of the kids for school,'' Norlemann said. |
