Rider missed the team's charter at LAX by mere minutes and had to catch a later commercial flight. He arrived in New York by Saturday evening.

The Lakers' flight was scheduled to leave at 9 a.m.

``He was there at the breakfast we had this morning, that's all that's important to me,'' coach Phil Jackson

, it happened to the best of players that I played with. But I just have a rule that's just hard and stringent. You get five minutes - if you're not there, we're gone.''

Of course, Rider has bigger problems. He is out of compliance with the league's drug after-care program and being fined daily, with the threat of a five-game suspension hanging over him. Rider said he planned to meet with NBA NBA

Saturday's missed plane was the latest in a series of pratfalls by Rider since joining the Lakers. Among his many late arrivals, Rider missed a team bus to a game in San Antonio in November and arrived an hour late for a home game in December.

But Rider had been a near-model citizen for most of January. Jackson was asked how well Rider was toeing the line.

``With J.R., as with a Dennis Rodman, that's not the issue,'' he said. ``The issue is about playing and being ready to play on the court. That's going to be part of their behavior. It's either going to be on the line, or at the line, or over the line. . . . That's the way he exists right now. But he's been on the other side of it all the time.

``But it tells me something about his willingness, his preparedness and his desire.''

Rider said he was five minutes late and dismissed the incident as ``no big deal. I got here and life goes on.''

Kobe Bryant said the incident, and Rider's trouble with the league, are not a concern.

``As long as he goes out there on the court and plays hard, which we all know he's going to do, we don't have any problem,'' Bryant said.
