RICHESON PLAYER OF YEAR : ROYAL, AGOURA PLAYERS GAIN CIF WATER POLO HONORS.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

If Royal High School's Chris Richeson had his way, he'd be celebrating his selection as the Southern Section Division IV Water Polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  Player of the Year while also enjoying the Highlanders' second straight Division IV championship.

``It would have been even better if we could have won that second championship,'' Richeson said. ``But this is still a great way to end my high school career. I don't have any complaints''

Richeson is joined on the All-Southern Section club by teammates David Radka and Nate Ball (first team), Garrett Herzer and Petr Lavrikov (second team), and Joe Andelin (third team).

``I could never have done any of this without my teammates and coaches,'' Richeson said. ``They helped me a great deal.''

Richeson, who averaged five goals per game this year, is a hard worker and dedicated to absorbing as much of the sport as possible. Couple those traits with his natural ability, and it's no surprise that he reached the heights that he did in his career.

``He's very much a student of the game,'' said Royal coach Steve Snyder. ``Like a master chess player he knows what moves to make two moves ahead of his opponent.''

Although Royal didn't start compiling individual stats until the sixth game of the year, Richeson scored 136 goals, dished dished

In addition, his role as team leader was critical in the Highlanders' trek to a second-straight trip to the Division IV final.

``He really embodied em·bod·y

Richeson said that winning the championship last year was his favorite memory of his time at Royal.

``It was unbelievable,'' he said. ``To know that we put so much hard work into it and then to wrap it all up with the championship was incredible.''

Richeson, a senior, hopes to play college water polo next year. Radka, on the other hand, will return next season.

school schedule, Radka settled down this year and developed into one of the Highlanders' best players. Snyder believes his best water polo is ahead of him. Two of Radka's brothers played at Royal and later on the college level. Snyder thinks the younger Radka has more potential than both of them.

``By the later part of the season he came on and fulfilled the potential we knew he had,'' Snyder said.

Ball became a defensive stopper for the Highlanders and allowed the team to dictate what it wanted to do defensively. He consistently shut down the opposing team's 2-meter man, which made it easier for Royal to defend.

``I don't think we'll be able to replace somebody like Nate,'' Snyder said. ``In 17 years of coaching, he's the best 2-meter defender I've ever had.''

Herzer is a junior goalie who Snyder thinks will develop into an outstanding senior. Lavrikov switched from goalie to a field position so Snyder could bring Herzer along. In the process, Lavrikov became one of Royal's most dependable players - as was Andelin.

Bookman, a senior, scored 104 goals and had 58 assists this year for the Chargers, who advanced to the Southern Section Division IV semifinals before falling to Cabrillo.

``He put in a lot of hard work and became the big gun of the team,'' said Agoura coach Jason Rosenthal. Cirincione, a senior driver, had 51 goals, 36 assists and a team-high 48 steals.
