In the fifth of eight such programs scheduled this season, the symphony invited the Ayo Adememi African Ensemble to teach kids basic African rhythms and demonstrate the fundamentals of African drumming. The event coincided with this month's Black History celebration.

Nora Frolick of Granada Hills, said her 4-year-old son, Japhy, couldn't keep his eyes off the drums. ``It's good that it was African-American. I like that reinforcement,'' she said.

More than 550 children and parents crowded into the auditorium, for the largest turnout this season, according to according to

``This was pretty off the charts,'' said Price. While the program is usually more classically oriented, she said, the African Ensemble offered a chance to show diversity in music.

Before Adememi hit the stage, the youngsters were able to fiddle around with flutes, trumpets, cellos and trombones, among other instruments, at the ``musical instrument petting zoo.'' But when the drumming began, many of the children became enraptured en·rap·ture
