FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- New Advanced ID Corp. ultra high frequency animal livestock identification system that provides superior reading distances and greater ease of use for ranchers being used in tracing multiple elk herds by Colorado Department of Agriculture.

According to Myrna Hansen, Co-owner of Top Rac Elk Ranch of Fort Collins Colorado, "Our herd is closely monitored for quality assurance and having a system that provides superior tag readability from a greater distance is very helpful. We are charting general health, nutrition and also other activity of our herd on an on-going basis and it can be very time consuming. Of course there are additional challenges when our bulls are in rutting season. It becomes especially important to have a little more distance from the bull when reading the tags. Our sires and dames have achieved award winning status and our bloodline is rising in value. Our harvested velvet pills (soft antlers) are used to produce our own human health supplements that are rich in chondroitin sulfate, glycosamine, and are a useful and natural anti inflammatory for people with arthritis. Chronic Wasting Disease - CWD is another reason for our pro-active identification efforts. We want well documented information for our partners in industry and the Colorado Department of Agriculture. If there are any cases of CWD near our ranch, it is critical to have the ability to show trace-back history to assure the herd was or was not exposed to near-by CWD positive herds. Having a well-documented identification program can mean the difference in whether a herd can be saved or destroyed. All of us have to become very active in efforts to understand as much as possible about CWD, to identify our stock and to take action when needed. While our herd has not tested positive and we have a seven year clean history, it is important to participate and to monitor aggressively. It is our industry, it is our livelihood that we hope will grow and prosper for our children, CWD can destroy it very quickly."

Scott Leach Chronic Wasting Disease Field Investigator for Colorado Department of Agriculture has roughly 130 captive elk in a current study of the Advanced ID DataTag(TM) and Advanced ID RFID - UHF Reader. According to Scott, "The State of Colorado is one of several states to receive grant money from USDA to move forward with animal identification pilot studies. In terms of tagging elk, we not only want to conform with the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), but we also need a tracking system for animal disease traceback. With a well documented history and tagging program that provides traceability, we can help ranchers avoid possible losses and protect their investments. Ultra high frequency tags provide increased readability with elk compared to low frequency identification. We conducted pilot tests on elk with several different low frequency identification methods (i.e. ear tags, implants, and rumen boluses), but we found that the readability with the low frequency was not practical. We wanted to maximize the readability of the tags to protect the animal, benefiting the rancher. Advanced ID understood our needs and has been able to adjust applications to maximize ease of use. This is a beginning point and all of us are working on this project to maximize the value of optimal identification for elk. This is just one component of our state-wide CWD program that includes environmental exposure, nutrition and other factors. This work is to understand, educate and to communicate. Having an optimal identification program will help all to enhance and protect one of Colorado's most valued natural treasures, the Elk. CWD and other diseases can be alarming to the public, since sadly in some cases animals must be destroyed to prevent the spread of CWD. Our objective is to create a system that could provide a timely disease traceback and to avoid the unnecessary destruction of some herds when CWD is discovered in a given area."

About Chronic Wasting Disease - CWD: Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) affecting elk and deer (cervids) in North America. This degenerative neurological illness has affected both farmed and wild cervids in the US, thus impacting the hunting and wildlife industries as well as domestic and international markets for farmed cervids and cervid products.
