RF-sealable PET sheet replaces PVC & PETG. (Keeping Up with Extrusion).A patented monolayer mon·o·lay·er n. 1. A film or layer one molecule thick formed at the interface between water and either oil or air by a substance such as a partially esterified fatty acid that contains both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in the same PET sheet is made RF weldable by adding polarity to a non-polar base resin in the sheet extruder. The sheet was launched this year by Alcoa Kama Corp. of Hazleton, Pa. The firm believes this is the first commercial RF-sealable PET sheet. PET on its own is inert to radio-frequency energy, unlike highly polar PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride. PVC in full polyvinyl chloride Synthetic resin, an organic polymer made by treating vinyl chloride monomers with a peroxide. sheet for packaging. SealPET targets replacement of PVC and PETG PETG Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol PETG Performance Evaluation Task Group for consumer packaging. Alcoa Kama makes SealPET 7.5-50 mils thick and up to 48 in. wide on rolls of up to 40 in. diam. One of its first commercial applications is a rigid package for electronic equipment. SealPET's tensile strength tensile strength Ratio of the maximum load a material can support without fracture when being stretched to the original area of a cross section of the material. When stresses less than the tensile strength are removed, a material completely or partially returns to its is much greater than PVC's (7200 psi vs. 5500 psi); its ultimate elongation is 300% vs. 75% for PVC; and SealPET's clarity is much better, especially in heavy gauges, Alcoa Kama says. In some cases, RF sealability may require different machine settings from PVC or PETG. Tel: (800) 628-7598, www.alcoa.com |
