, AMPS, DAMPS and PHS (Personal Handyphone System) A TDMA-based cellular phone system introduced in Japan in mid-1995. Operating in the 1880-1930 MHz band, PHS uses microcells that cover an area only 100 to 500 meters in diameter, resulting in lower equipment costs but requiring more base  wireless base stations.

An objective of any reference design is to offer the best possible product solution to meet customers' application needs. National Semiconductor selected RFM for collaboration to meet this objective and provide a reference design solution that is expected to expedite a customer's overall engineering effort. The RFM SAW filters provide technical advantages such as low insertion loss, small size, and low cost to achieve market and application requirements. RFM has supplied samples of these filters to base station customers in both domestic and international markets.

John Steininger, Base Station Business Unit Manager for National Semiconductor's Wireless Communication Product Line, commented, "RFM's new, low cost SAWs and National Semiconductor's Diversity Receiver Chipset are proving to be the winning combination with our GSM base station customers, particularly in EDGE receiver designs. With RFM's SAWs, we are able to hit both the performance requirements and the cost targets our customers are demanding."

"We feel these reference designs for National Semiconductor's DRCS chipset recognize RFM's unique technologies and state-of-the-art SAW filter design capability," stated Dr. Jidong Dai, Executive Director of RFM's Communications Products Group. "The chipset and filters together provide a low cost, easy to implement, system solution from RF to digital baseband for wireless base station customers."

RFM, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is a leading developer and manufacturer of a broad range of radio frequency components and modules based on surface acoustic wave technology for the automotive, computer, consumer, industrial and telecommunications markets worldwide.
