applications, announced today that it has begun production shipments of power amplifiers for use in Tele Aid, a telematics system developed by Motorola and Mercedes-Benz.

Telematics systems use a wireless network to collect and disseminate data. Mobile telematics applications include vehicle tracking and positioning, on-line navigation and emergency assistance. The Tele Aid is a standard feature on all model year 2001 Mercedes-Benz vehicles and provides drivers with automatic emergency response, roadside assistance and product information.

"We are very pleased that our power amplifiers have been selected for use in this state-of-the-art telematics system," said Dave Norbury, RFMD's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "This announcement underscores the significant new opportunities we have to supply wireless solutions for automotive applications."

Greg Thompson, RFMD's director of sales, added, "These power amplifiers help create an innovative product for the automotive industry that gives consumers a variety of different services. We look forward to further complementing our core handset business by supplying wireless components for telematics and other non-handset applications such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), wireless modems and wireless WANs."

RF Micro Devices is providing two power amplifiers for the Tele Aid system. These high-power, high-efficiency linear power amplifiers are manufactured using an advanced Gallium Arsenide Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor The heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) is an improvement of the bipolar junction transistor (BJT) that can handle signals of very high frequencies up to several hundred GHz.
