REWARDS PONDERED IN KILLING MURDER CASE HAS FEW LEADS.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Two $5,000 rewards are being considered by Palmdale and Los Angeles County officials to try to spur leads in the investigation of the Feb. 22 slaying of Michelle O'Keefe.

The Palmdale City Council will vote Wednesday on offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer. A similar reward is expected to be considered by the county Board of Supervisors The examples and perspective in this article or section may represent an unduly geographically limited view of the subject.

``Homicide detectives are investigating the case but have few strong leads that point them to the suspect of this vicious and senseless crime,'' Anne Ambrose, senior administrative analyst, wrote in a report to the City Council. ``The posting of a reward is another effort to keep the search for Michelle's murderer in the forefront of the public's awareness.''

If information is provided that does lead to an arrest and conviction, the homicide detectives investigating the case will be the final arbiter of who will receive the reward, city officials said.

In case multiple people provide the same information that leads to an arrest and conviction, the reward will be split among the informants.

The friend dropped O'Keefe off at her car in the lot and, once she saw O'Keefe turn on her lights and begin backing out of her space, she drove away, deputies said.

Investigators are unsure what happened next except that a parking lot security guard heard gunshots and, following his company's procedure, called for backup. Within about eight to 10 minutes, security guards found that O'Keefe's Mustang had backed out of its space and into a planter. Her body was behind the wheel.
