REWARD UP IN BIGGEST CASH HEIST.

Byline: Peter Hartlaub Daily News Staff Writer

An armored car company doubled its reward offer to $250,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of gunmen who carried out the largest cash robbery robbery, in law, felonious taking of property from a person against his will by threatening or committing force or violence. The injury or threat may be directed against the person robbed, his property, or the person or property of his relative or of anyone in his  in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  history, FBI officials said.

The suspects - at least four white and African-American males - staged the multimillion-dollar heist just after midnight Sept. 13 at a Dunbar Armored Inc. depot in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or , authorities said.

Dunbar offered $125,000 a week after the heist but has increased the reward to $250,000.

Dunbar officials declined to say publicly how much money was taken, but Timothy T. McNally, the FBI's Los Angeles field office chief, said it was ``substantial, very substantial.''

``We hope the decision by Dunbar generates investigative leads The term investigative leads refers to any information which could potentially aid in the successful resolution of the investigation. For example investigative leads pertaining to robbery offense might include: description of the perpetrator(s), visible impression(s) of  that we currently don't possess,'' McNally said. ``We want people to report information, no matter how small. Let us decide if it's important.''

McNally called it the ``largest robbery in terms of a dollar loss,'' which doesn't include robberies involving property loss or stolen merchandise. An FBI spokesman said he didn't know how much money was taken in the second-largest robbery.

Police and FBI officials haven't made any arrests in connection with the depot robbery. McNally said he has no reason to believe the suspects are connected to any other heists in the area.

The suspects used portable walkie-talkies and left in a ``U-Haul truck or similar vehicle,'' law enforcement officials said.

McNally said there have been 16 armored car robberies in Los Angeles since 1993, but no other facility holdups during the same period.

The FBI urged anyone with information to call agents at (310) 477-6565 or the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division at (213) 485-0780. Identities will remain anonymous.
