RETURN TDS DO IN CSUN DAVIS SPEEDSTER SINKS MATADORS UC DAVIS 38, CSUN 31.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

DAVIS Davis, city (1990 pop. 46,209), Yolo co., central Calif.; settled in the 1850s, inc. 1917. But the star turned out to be a seldom-used kickoff returner In American and Canadian football, a kick returner (KR) is the player on special teams who is primarily responsible to catch kickoffs and attempts to return them in the opposite direction. .

UC Davis' Jason Holleman returned two kickoffs 90 yards for touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lead UC Davis to a 38-31 victory over Cal State Northridge on Saturday in front of 6,600 at Toomey Field Toomey Field is a 10,111-seat multi-purpose stadium in Davis, California. It opened in 1949 and was home to the University of California, Davis Aggies football team through the 2006 season. The first game, on November 18, 1949 was a 12-3 victory over Chico State. .

Holleman, a sprinter on the track team, found nearly identical open lanes on both scores. He caught the ball on the left side, ran up the middle, broke to the near sideline sideline

and outraced everyone both times. He wasn't touched on either one.

On the second touchdown, which put UC Davis up 38-31, Holleman eluded the grasp of Steve Paysinger at the 30-yard line and ran in untouched with 2 minutes, 34 seconds left.

``I've never seen anything like that,'' CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  coach Jeff Kearin said. ``On one he faked a reverse and we bit on that like it was the first football game we've played. What a great talent. I couldn't tell you his name for the love of money. No. 10, right?

``He's a fun kid to watch. But the play broke down on our side. That's unforgivable.''

Kearin told Holleman the Matadors (1-4) made a star out of him after the game. Holleman could only smile and say thanks.

Holleman, a senior, substitutes as a kickoff returner and was lining up on the left side because UC Davis coach Bob Biggs said film showed CSUN kicked off to the right. That was the plan. But on both kickoff returns, the Matadors kicked to Holleman.

And Holleman took it from there.

``We had some great blocks on kickoff return, finally,'' Holleman said. ``They made some big blocks and I just used my track speed.''

UC Davis (4-1) likely will make Holleman, who's not even listed in the starting lineups For the line of action figures, see .

Cal State Northridge and UC Davis countered with little-used running games, especially in the first half. Nearly everyone figured it would be a four-hour passing marathon but nothing went according to according to

After UC Davis took a 31-24 lead with 8:54 left on Holleman's first return, CSUN tried to answer but quarterback Marcus Brady Marcus Brady (Born September 24, 1979) is a quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. College career

a season-high seven times. He lost 70 yards on sacks and had a net of minus-33 yards. Brady completed 26 of 38 passes for 300 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

But just after Brady led the Matadors on a drive that resulted in a 4-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Ramos to take a 24-17 lead with 13:05 left, Holleman scored.

Davis quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan completed 13 of 23 passes for 201 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. But the Aggies running game was impressive too. UC Davis ran 33 times for 127 yards. Not bad for a team that usually doesn't run much.

The CSUN defense had little or no pressure on O'Sullivan all night and didn't record a sack.

``We do our best and we fight but sometimes we come up short,'' defensive lineman Andy Zaldivar said. ``They were quick.''

CSUN sophomore receiver D.J. Hackett had a solid night with 10 receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown. Ramos had four catches for 12 yards and two touchdowns. On both short scores, Ramos was open in the end zone.

The Matadors led 16-10 at halftime and last led 24-17. On CSUN's final drive, Brady was sacked twice and fumbled on the last one.

``They were probably the most aggressive on the pass rush we've seen,'' Brady said. ``They were swarming swarming
