Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  graduate Michelle Greco will find herself out of a starting role upon Gomez's return.

If that's the case, Greco said Saturday, she accepts it. But she wants to start and she made a strong case with a career-best 20 points in Saturday's 86-67 victory over host Pepperdine.

``Obviously, I want to start,'' Greco said, ``but coming off the bench and being a sparkplug spark·plug

by freshman Nicole Kaczmarski, who also scored a career-high 20 points against the Waves.

But there's one other option: a three-guard offense.

``We can go with three guards in a second,'' UCLA coach Kathy Olivier said. ``I have no problem with that.''

Actually, Greco's and Kaczmarski's play was just what the Bruins (4-2) needed. Pepperdine (2-4) used a zone defense, collapsing on post players Maylana Martin Maylana Lynn Martin (born April 17, 1978 in Honolulu, Hawaii) is an American former professional women's basketball player and currently a collegiate coach.

So they did. Greco had 13 at halftime and Kaczmarski had 11. By game's end, UCLA had made eight 3-pointers, one more than their season total and one shy of the school record for a game.

The shooting opened up the post, allowing Martin to score points in bunches and finish with 21 and moved past Ann Meyers Ann Elizabeth Meyers (born March 26, 1955 in San Diego, California) is a distinguished figure in the history of women's basketball and sports journalism. Meyers scored 1,685 points from 1975-78. Martin has 1,704.

Marie Philman scored 13 points for UCLA.

Pepperdine's press wasn't completely ineffective. It held UCLA to 38.2-percent shooting in the first half and helped overcome a double-digit deficit during a 25-10 run of 11 minutes, 58 seconds. Guard Rasheeda Clark scored the last 10 points of that run to give the Waves a 34-32 lead with 2:57 to play.

Clark finished with 19 points and Dee Braxton had 13.

The Waves also held a 30-20 halftime rebounding advantage, but UCLA's second-half post play trimmed that to 45-44 by game's end.
