RETIRING DOCTOR SETS SIGHTS ON TRAVEL.

LANCASTER - Old doctors don't retire, they just atrophy, says Dr. Waldo S. Jones.

But but he won't be just sitting on his surgeon's hands from now on. Instead he'll re-pack his surgeon's bag and head for foreign climes.

Although his plans are not cast in plaster at this point, he expects he will probably settle in Brazil, where he already has a medical license.

Much of his yearly vacation time has been spent in his beloved Brazil and he's made several lasting friendships there.

Jones said he's really enjoyed most of his patients and has gained much satisfaction from making them feel better.

Jones' Kaiser co-workers gave him a retirement party. They presented him with a plaque making him the ``first recipient of the five star committee character award, in recognition of his dedication, quality and excellent service to the Kaiser Permanente family.''

Besides Brazil, Jones expects to travel to Australia, Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov.  and the Australian island of Timor.

Actually, he may spend some time researching but that won't be his major work, he said.

He's interested in a multitude of subjects not all related to medicine and he will now have time to indulge himself in the study of some of those.

He loves the varied cultures of the world, the government politics and the historical backgrounds of the populace where his travels take him.

He spent about two months after medical school in South Dakota South Dakota (dəkō`tə), state in the N central United States. It is bordered by North Dakota (N), Minnesota and Iowa (E), Nebraska (S), and Wyoming and Montana (W).  on an Indian reservation, then moved to San Diego for a time before migrating to the Antelope Valley.

Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster, Palmdale and South Valley have been announced. All meals include bread, margarine and coffee, tea or milk for a suggested donation of $2.

Monday: Tuna casserole, peas and carrots, three bean salad, pineapple juice, pears.
