, he said his 31 years of law enforcement experience has given him insight into the judicial system and the ability to weigh evidence fairly. Pederson is a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's captain and has been doing consulting work for the U.S. Department of Justice.

The 23 jurors and four alternates will hear cases that bypass the Municipal Court to determine whether there is enough evidence to hold a trial and also will investigate other local government departments, such as the zoo and juvenile homes.

``They investigate what they feel needs to be investigated in the county,'' Wallace said.

Jurors are paid $25 per day, plus mileage and parking expenses and typically work six hours five days each week, Wallace said.
