RETAILERS BRACE FOR MORE SHOPPERS.

Byline: Enrique Rivero Daily News Staff Writer

First came the pre-Christmas wave. Now retailers and shopping mall managers alike are preparing for the after-Christmas crowd.

It's the annual onslaught of shoppers seeking post-Christmas bargains. Retailers expect fairly heavy traffic when store doors open Friday morning.

``It's a traditional heavy shopping day,'' said Dan Millman, general manager of the 5-year-old Burbank Media City Center mall. ``This year I'm anticipating a heavier crowd than we have had in the past. It's been a very successful season.''

Retailers traditionally offer heavy discounts on many items, including clothing and holiday ornaments for next year's Christmas tree Christmas tree

``A lot of people make it (post-Christmas shopping) a tradition and plan their day that way,'' Goldstone said. For example, Macy's is offering 30 percent to 50 percent discounts on fall and winter coats and will also have many clearance items on the shelves.

Many retailers and analysts say that holiday shopping fell short of their projections while many consumers said they were spending less this year on Christmas gifts than in prior years.

As for Southern California, retail analyst Richard Giss of Deloitte & Touche LLP LLP - Lower Layer Protocol  dropped his projections recently for retail holiday spending this year to a 3 percent to 4 percent improvement over last year. The earlier projection was a 4 percent to 5 percent improvement.

Analysts have blamed the failure to meet expectations partly on a long holiday shopping season, which started in October at many stores. But Millman said the Burbank center did well this year with particularly heavy numbers of last-minute shoppers.

``I was taken by surprise with the traffic Monday and Tuesday,'' he noted.
