RESTORING PAST GLORY; 1ST PHASE OF CITY HALL MAKEOVER NEAR END.

Byline: Nathan Greely Staff Writer

Workers will be polishing the marble face of Burbank City Hall this week as the first phase of a major makeover nears conclusion.

Over the last year and a half, the 57-year-old building has been repainted and its windows, which were originally caulked caulk also calk

``We've tried to retain the original appearance of the building, reversing some of the changes made in the '70s,'' said Bob Van Hazlen, Fleet and Building Manager for Burbank. ``Renovations in 1972 really moved away from the original aesthetic of the building.''

Most recently, the fountain in front of the building has been redone, removing the blue tiles which were put on in the '70s, and restoring it to its original appearance. Within the next six weeks, the marble on the front face of City Hall will be polished and the landscaping redone.

So far, the work has cost the city about $260,000. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony in early December to officially reopen the front of City Hall.

More renovations are in store beginning in April, city officials said. The Council chambers will be restored to their former condition. The lowered ceiling put in in the '70s will be removed, uncovering the large mural mural

Building will also be torn down, and the other half of a large mural restored.

The cost of this last leg of renovations will be about $250,000, and the work should be completed by the end of June.

``It was definitely time for a face lift,'' Van Hazlen said, ``The beautification beau·ti·fy
