Members of the service organization assembled the three-tiered, tile-trimmed fountain. They also hooked up the plumbing to operate its water spigots and installed some electrical fixtures, as well.

The Rotary Club also arranged a dinner dance Saturday night to celebrate the new fountain, which sits in a courtyard on the mansion grounds where silent movie cowboy Hart lived until his death in 1946.

The new fountain, built by Garden Concepts, cost the club about $1,000. John Mann There are several public figures named John Mann.

fountain had fallen prey to vandals who tipped it over and broke it. The water pump didn't work, either.

The Jan. 17, 1994, temblor further damaged the fountain. ``It fell over during the earthquake and broke,'' said Rotary Club member Tony Inderbitzin.

Norm Phillips, superintendent of the property for the county parks department, said three of the old fountain's tiers were gone, and the portion remaining looked more like a giant bird bath than a fountain.

``It was just going to go undone if we didn't do something,'' said Rotary member Greg Nutter, who will serve as club president next year. ``It's a beautiful mansion up there. This is a valuable part of our history in this valley.''

The fountain wasn't part of the original decor at the 10,000-square-foot Spanish-style mansion, situated on 232 acres, said Phillips, caretaker of the mansion and grounds since 1986.

The fountain sat on a site that, in Hart's day, was a swimming pool. After the property was tied up in probate court probate court

for 12 years, the county gained ownership of the Hart estate and opened it as a public park in 1958, Phillips said.

The county filled in the swimming pool and made a patio, with the fountain as its centerpiece, Phillips said.
