The scoop: Westlake travels to Ventura for the second straight week after pounding Buena 37-12 last Friday. Don't overlook Westlake's defense, which shut down Buena's passing game and was effective against the run. Ventura's running game is potent and will cause problems. Kennedy allowed 20 fourth-quarter points but held on for a 40-32 win against Poly. WR Matt Garnas (five catches, 52 yards) is among the best in the City. LB Jason Newman sparks the defense.

MONROE at CHATSWORTH

Time, place: Chatsworth High, 7 p.m.

Records:Monroe 1-0; Chatsworth 1-0

The scoop: Look for plenty of scoring. The Chancellors are No. 1 in City Section offense and third from the bottom in defense. QB Matt Cassel was 17 of 23 for 276 yards and three TDs in Friday's 35-13 win over Reseda; he looks for a new target, as prime receiver Reggie Lee is out (shoulder injury).

Monroe used its double-wing running attack to trounce Hoover 42-27. RBs Andrew Newchurch, Andre Peeples and DeAndre Phillips combined for 248 yards and four TDs on just 18 carries.

HIGHLAND at CANYON

Place, time: Canyon High, 7:30 p.m.

Records:Highland 0-1; Canyon 1-0

The scoop: Highland took its lumps in last week's 42-14 loss to Valencia. The Bulldogs must improve their passing game, as starting QB Anthony Herrera was 0 for 5 with three interceptions. RBs Kevin Morris (14 carries, 137 yards, two TDs) and Brandon McElvaine (17 carries, 78 yards) keyed the offense.

Slow-starting Canyon managed just eight first downs but scored 14 fourth-quarter points to beat Camarillo 23-13. RB Drew Welch gained 108 yards on six carries, including a 76-yard TD. All-Southern Section kicker Pat Terry averaged 37.5 yards per punt and converted a 27-yard field goal last week.

Highland defeated Canyon 28-26 last year.

SAUGUS AT SIMI VALLEY

Place, time: Simi Valley High, 7 p.m.

1998 records: Saugus 0-1, Simi Valley 0-1

The scoop: The Centurions played offensive lineman shuffle in Week 1, but none of it mattered to Sean Stoddard, who rushed for 219 yards in 31 carries in a 35-28 loss to Rio Mesa. The scoop:Two former Marmonte League rivals meet with the hope of getting untracked in the the 1998 season. Agoura was edged in the last quarter by Calabasas. Camarillo lost to Santa Clarita-area power Canyon.

Agoura was in excellent position win its game when Garrett Lepisto ran a kickoff back 90 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter, but the defense allowed a 68-yard drive to the Coyotes in the closing minutes. The drive culminated with a touchdown pass on fourth-and-15.

Steve Dacare was impressive in his first varsity game for the Scorpions. The wide receiver caught four passes for 98 yards and a touchdown.
