THE PACESETTER

GLADSTONE'S 4 FISH

GLADSTONE'S motto is: "If it swims, we've cooked it." That's one of the reasons the restaurant is the top-grossing eatery in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

The other reason is its location: right on the edge of the U.S., where the turf meets the surf.

Ever since it opened in 1972, the restaurant with sawdust and peanuts on the floor and a spectacular view of the blue Pacific, has been a culinary symbol of everything Southern Californian. It's frequented by longtime locals, tourists and Hollywood types. The place is so popular that at one time even Lakers star Shaquille O'Neal was interested in buying it.

Last year the restaurant grossed $13.95 million, up 6.48 percent from $13.1 million in 1998.

The 700-seat restaurant sits on state-owned land in Will Rogers State Park and nearly lost its 15-year lease a few years ago. But California Beach Restaurants, which operates Gladstone's, was able to negotiate a 20-year lease renewal. With that, the restaurant was remodeled. It added an outdoor kitchen and is now able to seat as many as 375 people out on the balcony.
