RESTAURANT ENTERPRISES GROUP SPEARHEADS LOS ANGELES RIOT RELIEF EFFORT
IRVINE, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Norman N. Habermann, president and chief executive officer of Irvine-based Restaurant Enterprises Group Inc. (REG), today announced the results of a drive to collect food and supplies for the victims of the Los Angeles riots. The response from the company's suppliers was outstanding and represents a genuine desire on the part of businesses which derive a portion of their livelihood from the community to give something back in this time of need. The company's relief effort will provide food through June when more formal long-term efforts will take over.
Valued at more than $150,000, the donations were distributed under the auspices of the international relief organization, AmeriCares, who consolidated the donations in their Carson warehouse and then redistributed them to the community through the First AME Church and the Brotherhood Crusade. Among the items donated were bread from Old Country and DiCarlo; muffins from Coco's; tortillas from El Torito; china from Rego Corp.; frozen foods, muffins and Promise from Van den Bergh Foods; instant potatoes and beans from Basic American; fruits and potatoes from G&G Produce; food and candy from Kraft; trucking from Orange County Cold; cereal from General Mills; jams and jellies from Smucker's; spaghetti from Royal Angelus and from Pacific Premium. Additional donations are forthcoming from Heinz and Proctor & Gamble.
AmeriCares is a privately funded international relief organization that solicits contributions and aid from American businesses. REG Chairman J. Peter Grace, is chairman of AmeriCares' Advisory Committee.
REG is the nation's third largest full-service restaurant chain with 608 company-operated units under the trade names of Coco's, Carrows, El Torito, Reuben's, Charley Brown's and Bob's Big Boy, as well as a number of individual specialty restaurants. In addition, REG has more than 200 franchised Coco's in Japan and Korea.
