Thorp, a junior, is a important member of both teams, and for the past two years has made the transition a smooth one.

``I'm pretty much ready to go after volleyball, I don't really need a rest,'' Thorp said. ``They kind of made me take one this year though.''

Coach Don McMaster, along with Thorp's parents, made the decision to hold Thorp out of practice for a week. That left her slightly behind some of her teammates, but the gap was easy to close.

Last week she was selected to the all-tournament team in the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. She had 31 points, five rebounds and four steals in a second-round victory over Rio Mesa, and 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals in a championship-game loss to Royal.

``I think she is just starting to get into her game with the Thousand Oaks tournament,'' McMaster said. ``She obviously doesn't think she needs a break, but I think it's important to give her a little rest.''

But when jokingly asked if he secretly cheers against Westlake's volleyball team in the playoffs, McMaster said he certainly did not. The Warriors, with Thorp at setter setter: see sporting dog.

``I think the further they go in volleyball, it only helps us in basketball,'' McMaster said. ``I want them to have experience in those playoff games Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

``We have some girls who ran cross country, and being in a pressure situation like that helps us too.''

Another parallel exists between volleyball and basketball, in relation to Thorp's playmaking ability. In volleyball, Thorp played in a two-setter offense along with Lauren Mills.

In that system, constant on-court adjustments must be made, and Thorp is not allowed to specialize spe·cial·ize

in one position or skill. For the Warriors to be successful, she must be a sharp outside hitter, but she must also provide good sets to other hitters and play solid defense.

In basketball, Thorp is classified as a point guard, although she is just as aggressive under the basket as many of the post players she faces.

``She is a point guard,'' McMaster said with some hesitation. ``She moves the ball up the court for us, but all-around she's probably our best player.

``She has a scorer's mentality, which means that even if she isn't shooting well in a particular game, she can still put up points in other ways. She's been almost perfect from the free-throw line free-throw line

 this season.''

That playmaking ability is born of aggression, a trait trait (trat)

She continued to play for much of the first half, and scored five points as the Warriors battled the defending league champions to a halftime tie.

But Thorp barely lasted two minutes in the third quarter, and was back on the bench after picking up two quick reach-in fouls. The Warriors made only three field goals in the second half and lost by 25 points.

``I just need to watch the reaches,'' Thorp said. ``I reach for the ball too much, and I need to move my feet more. I have to work on everything really. Defense, shooting, dribbling . . .''

Improvement will be necessary for all of Westlake's players if the Warriors hope to compete for the league title. ``We have to be ready for every game,'' McMaster said. ``The only team I haven't seen play is Agoura, so we know exactly how tough the league is going to be.''

If the Warriors have one advantage, it is teamwork (product, software, tool) Teamwork - A SASD tool from Sterling Software, formerly CADRE Technologies, which supports the Shlaer/Mellor Object-Oriented method and the Yourdon-DeMarco, Hatley-Pirbhai, Constantine and Buhr notations. . Thorp, who began playing on the varsity as a freshman, has played with seniors Lottie Kanama and Heather Woods the past two years. Kanama and Woods provide the Warriors a strong inside presence and a balance to Thorp's perimeter play.

``The communication is good between us,'' Thorp said. ``We've been together for a while, so we are comfortable with the way each other plays. We know league is going to be tough, so we have to be at the top of our games.''
