I think we did everything well.'' County waterworks officials advised people living between Avenue L-8 and Avenue N and between 55th Street West and 65th Street West to boil their water or add chlorine tablets through Sunday afternoon. Los Angeles County Waterworks officials went door to door distributing advisory notices to residents between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Thursday and started up again at 8:30 a.m. Friday. The water service disruption, which started about 4 p.m. Thursday, was blamed on a faulty chemical feed pump a force pump for supplying water to a steam boiler, etc. See also: Feed at the Antelope Valley-East Kern Water Agency's Quartz Hill plant. Along with the feed-pump failure, an alarm system malfunctioned and failed to warn water officials in time to initiate a back-up system, forcing them to shut the plant down, officials said. ``We had to shut the plant down in order to prevent dirty water from getting out into the system,'' Spinarski said. ``Nothing left the plant that wasn't healthy.'' AVEK officials said the equipment problem was resolved overnight and they had restarted their water plant at 3 a.m. Service was fully restored by 9 a.m., officials said. After AVEK stopped supplying water, service was stopped to residents for about an hour until Los Angeles County Waterworks District turned to wells and stored water. But because the backup system has not been used for several years, officials said that the pipes also carried water with unsettled dirt particles. ``Some haven't been used for a while,'' said Roediger. ``It makes the water appear cloudy.'' At the Albertson's in Quartz Hill, officials said they were selling more bottled water than usual. |
