RESIDENTS SURPRISED BY DRIZZLE UNSEASONABLE WEATHER TO PERSIST OVER WEEKEND.

Byline: SUE DOYLE Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Driving a public bus on a route through Santa Clarita, Mary Davis has practically seen it all, but Friday something caught her off guard: rain in August.

``It was really a change,'' Davis said. ``It seems like fall to me.''

Early morning drizzle that swept through the area Friday is expected to return again today and Sunday, with low clouds hanging from the skies, keeping the typically sizzling siz·zle

Shifting weather patterns have pushed July's screaming hot weather east. And now, instead of getting hot air blasts from the desert, cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean are wafting over Santa Clarita, Clark said.

However, Friday's unusual rain kept some inside.

``It was weird. It's supposed to be hot,'' Barrios said. ``It's not time to be raining now.''

Morning raindrops, however, had little effect on freeway traffic. In fact, the California Highway Patrol highway patrol

But don't expect the cool blast to last.

While weekend temperatures should hover in the mid-80-degree range, the area's naturally hot temperatures will return Monday and Tuesday. Both are expected to be mid-90-degree days, Clark said.

That comes as mixed news to 16-year-old Kyle Serrecchia. But at the same time, Serrecchia said that as the hot weather begins to blow out of town, it's a sign for school to start again.

``I don't want summer to end,'' he said with a sigh. ``I want the heat to end, though.''
