Byline: Sonia Giordani Daily News Staff Writer

There's nothing like a good, old-fashioned game of catch with your boy on a day off work.

So Neal Merem and his 10-year-old son, David, headed to Conejo Community Park this Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  to toss a ball around before meeting some friends for an afternoon picnic.

Or we'll play catch or go bicycling,'' said Merem, who works as a stockbroker in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

With a full day of musical events and children's activities lined up by the Conejo Recreation and Park District this Labor Day, Conejo Community Park drew hundreds of parents and children like the Merems looking for Looking for

``We don't have a regular Labor Day tradition or anything. Sometimes, we'll have a barbecue or go to the beach,'' said Cliff Hannel, holding his year-old Benny while his two older kids focused on the stage.

``It's just a nice day off to spend with them,'' he said.

``This is really wonderful for the kids, and it's a really nice day for us,'' said Suzanne Jurva, the kids' mother. ``We could have gone away for the long weekend, but we decided it was too much of a hassle. So this has really turned out to be just a relaxing few days for me.''

But new parents weren't the only ones who spent the day celebrating. Thousand Oaks retirees John and Lorraine Larkin got an early start Monday, putting up their American flag at home before heading off to the Goebel Senior Adult Center for the annual Labor Day Breakfast.

``Would you believe, we've never gone out on a holiday in some 25 years?'' said John Larkin, who sat with his wife eating a breakfast sandwich and coffee and chatting with family friends.

``Now all the kids are grown up and spread out. So this is kind of exciting for us,'' he said.

``We come here every Labor Day. We come here all the time, actually,'' said Bailey, who with McKee offered a line dancing demonstration to some of the newer dancers before helping to get others to participate.

``We like to line dance whenever we can. It's a chance to use the arms and legs a little and get some exercise, but it's not so tough on the legs,'' McKee said.
