Byline: Amy Collins and Lisa Van Proyen Daily News Staff Writers

Uri Yossefi is used to sweating out summer days without air conditioning air conditioning, mechanical process for controlling the humidity, temperature, cleanliness, and circulation of air in buildings and rooms. Indoor air is conditioned and regulated to maintain the temperature-humidity ratio that is most comfortable and healthful.  at his store, Chatsworth Cleaners, but Monday was tougher than usual as his community climbed to a record 108 degrees.

It was the highest since the mercury reached 103 there on the same day in 1969.

Yossefi was not alone in his discomfort. Records also were recorded in Pasadena, which peaked at 101 degrees, and in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , which reached 100, said Bruce Rockwell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

``It makes everybody lazy. We could barely walk around,'' said Yossefi, who used fans and opened doors for a light breeze light breeze

The Civic Center forecast for today calls for a high of 99, which would break a record of 97 set on the same day in 1891.

Downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  reached 91 on Monday, falling three degrees short of the 1971 record. Woodland Hills hit 104; Northridge, 103; Van Nuys, 102; and Burbank, 99.

Temperatures are heating up because of high-pressure zones from Arizona and interior California, which are keeping the marine layer offshore, Rockwell said.

The intense heat is expected to last through Thursday, with some cooling down Cooling down is the term used to describe an easy, full-body exercise that will allow the body to slowly transition from an exercise mode to a non-exercise mode. Depending on the intensity of the exercise, cooling down can involve a slow jog or walk, or with lower intensities,  to the upper 80s Thursday afternoon, Rockwell said.

, electricity loads reached high levels, but no records were set and officials did not expect energy shortages.

The Department of Water and Power, which services most of the Valley, expects record levels this week after using 5,123 megawatts of power Monday, said spokeswoman Karen Shepard-Grimes. The DWP's record was in 1990, when the peak demand level hit 5,331 megawatts.

``We are anticipating setting a new record if it continues at this level,'' Shepard-Grimes said.

``It's definitely above average. It's a lot, but not something we were unprepared to take care of,'' Becerra said.

Neither utility company experienced service problems Monday, officials said. But even so, officials recommended residents maintain their homes between a moderate 68 to 78 degrees and keep drapes drape

Robin Tarne of Woodland Hills tried to get going early Monday morning to beat the heat. Preparing for a trip, she had errands to do, but started out with a 3-mile run at Balboa Park Balboa Park is the name of several municipal parks, including the following:

``I just try to get to it early, but it doesn't always work that way,'' she said, after leaving a post-workout visit to the vitamin store for energy pills. She said she started too late on her run. ``I feel like throwing up when I'm done,'' she said.

John Garcia was on a crew putting asphalt over new fiber optic cables Pacific Bell buried along the hill leading up to Topanga. Sheltered in the shade of Monday morning, he said his crew had it much better off than others in the Valley - thanks to the breeze from over the mountains.
