SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``Schools and roads are always the big issues among residents,'' said Mike Haviland, Santa Clarita's economic development manager.

Random phone calls yielded 60 percent female respondents, and 126 residents from Saugus, 30 from Newhall, nine from Canyon Country, seven from Valencia and 13 from other communities. The vast majority lived in single-family homes. The survey's error margin was plus or minus 5 percent.

One notable find was that 53 percent of respondents said they did not work outside Santa Clarita, the lowest such response since the first city survey in 1995, Haviland said. Respondents, however, weren't asked if they indeed were employed.

Also on the increase was annual household income - with 21 percent making $100,000 or more.
