RESIDENTS MAKE WISH LIST NIGHT LIFE, CULTURAL ARTS CENTER AMONG REQUESTS IN CITY.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - More night life, a cultural arts center, coordinated traffic signals, open space and recreation areas, and high-paying jobs were some of the suggestions presented by residents as part of a strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.  and public input series conducted by the city.

The city received more than 1,700 responses as a result of a public outreach project, formerly known as Share the Vision. The strategic planning series was launched in January and ended last month. Renamed ``The Big Picture,'' the project included asking residents to call, e-mail or attend community meetings to share requests that would be considered by the Santa Clarita City Council.

A tally of responses as of March 2 include the following categories:

--Traffic - 370

--Growth - 263

--Cultural arts - 147

--Environment - 105

--Community - 99

--Parks and Recreation - 92

--Economic Development - 89

--Public Safety - 75

--Open Space - 53

--Transit - 19

--Other - 475

 and expand highways. ``The City Council told us that they wanted a variety of input from residents, businesses and community leaders,'' City Manager Ken Pulskamp said in a prepared statement. ``This is the most responses we have ever received on a community strategic plan and we are pleased with how many people wanted to communicate their ideas to us.

The city's staff is expected to analyze data collected and create a draft action plan for the City Council to review this spring.

Officials have said that the city has a 90 percent success rate in addressing the community's concerns. Many of the projects presently under way, such as a proposal to build a new community center in Newhall, new parks New Parks is an area in the city of Leicester, England. It is in the west of the city, close by the county border (west of which is Glenfield. South of New Parks is the Western Parks area, and to the east is the Newfound Pool area. , the Sports Complex and big box stores, have come from the process.
