RESIDENTS FIGHT HOSPITAL NEIGHBORS FEAR FACILITY WILL BRING TRAFFIC, CRIME.

The protesters live near the proposed site of the 120-bed facility on Tierra Subida Road north of Avenue Q-8, and said such a facility would bring noise, traffic and crime to the area.

``We don't want a hospital there - the noise, pollution. There is not enough room for all the traffic. Tierra Subida is a two-way street,'' said Sandra sandra (sänˑ·dr),

 Shehane. ``There's a crime element that usually comes with hospitals. We don't need that with our children.''

Universal Health Services Universal Health Services, Inc. NYSE: UHS is a Fortune 500 company based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. This company is one of the nation's largest health care management companies, operating acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities and ambulatory centers , which acquired Lancaster Community Hospital in January, has an agreement with the city of Palmdale to build the hospital. Universal officials have said they are about two years or so away from starting construction.

Palmdale has pledged $6.7 million for buying the 30 acres and doing other work to help the hospital. Palmdale lost its only hospital in 1996 with the closure of Desert Palms Community Hospital.

Universal officials could be not reached Thursday for comment.

Protesters said they are not against Palmdale building a hospital, but are opposed to having it in their residential neighborhood. , lights,'' said Linda Vanderwalker, who organized the march. ``There is a place for everything. We are not opposed to putting a hospital in Palmdale. They need one on the east side and not in our back yard.''

Vanderwalker said she has gathered more than 1,000 petition signatures against the project.

The protesters at first picketed in front of a hospital entrance but were ordered off hospital property by staff members.
