The morning after a fire that forced about 40 elderly residents from their apartment complex, the tenants spoke of their two-hour ordeal, surveyed damage and thanked firefighters.

``We just left with what we had on our backs On Our Backs (ISSN 0890-2224) was the first women-run erotica magazine and the first magazine to feature lesbian erotica for a lesbian audience in the United States. ,'' said John Phillips John Phillips or John Philips may refer to:

, an 87-year-old resident who lived across from where the fire started. ``The smoke was coming in here (in his apartment). We didn't know how bad it was.''

When Phillips returned to his apartment, he found two holes in his ceiling to the roof. But no other damage was done to his apartment.

``Fires are really scary,'' said Cecilia Birney, who lived two doors from where the fire took place. ``It's really hard to get around. You don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Birney said she left her apartment barefoot after her manager opened her door and screamed, ``Robe'' She was halfway down a hallway before realizing that her neighbor, who is confined to a wheelchair, was still inside.

She returned to her neighbor's apartment and wheeled the woman down the hallway, into the elevator and out of the building.

``I was just praying that nothing happened to my apartment,'' said the 74-year-old Birney, who has lived at the complex for eight years. On Thursday, she searched the hallways for a lost earring earring, a personal adornment, sometimes an amulet, worn attached to the ear lobe. Since prehistoric times the ear has been pierced for the insertion of the earring; certain primitive tribes distort the lobe with plugs several inches in diameter or with heavy stones. .

``When you get older you collect things,'' Birney said. ``I collect a lot of mementos.''

An exhaust fan left on in the bathroom of an upstairs unit is suspected to have caused the fire which began just before 10 p.m. Wednesday and spread into the attic, fire officials said.

The tenant who lives in the apartment had been in the hospital recently. Her daughter had been coming to the apartment to feed a cat and may have accidentally left the fan on, neighbors said.

Firefighters took about 30 minutes extinguishing the flames, which were confined to one unit of the 76-unit complex, and were able to contain much of the smoke by cutting holes in several apartments and a hallway.

``We got a good start on it and were able to put the fire out before it was extended,'' said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Fire Capt. Dirk Wegner. ``We put a heat hole above the fire.''

As the residents stood outside of their complex, firefighters brought them chairs and cold drinks and constantly asked them if they were OK.

``They came to see how we were doing,'' said 103-year-old Corina Sierra, ``and if we needed any medical attention. They were giving us news and were so nice to us.''

Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $5,000 to contents.
