RESFEST 2002 Launches With the Year's Best in Innovative Digital Filmmaking, Animation, Music, Art and Design.

The highly anticipated RESFEST 2002 will kick off in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts on September 18th. The Sixth Annual RESFEST will travel with its program of innovative digital works to 11 cities in seven countries.

The Festival will showcase the year's best short films, features, documentaries, music videos and animation through a mix of screenings, live music events, parties and seminars. On the feature roster will be: BREATH CONTROL, a documentary on the history of the human beat-box from director Joey Garfield and FULLTIME KILLER, a Hong Kong action film from directors Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai.

This year's festival producers received over 1,500 short film submissions, from which they created seven thematic shorts programs ranging from "By Design," showcasing experimental design films, to "In The Bedroom," a program of erotic shorts. The Festival will also include two music video programs and a retrospective of the works of visionary director Chris Cunningham.

The winner of the Perrier/RES road movie competition, PERRIER ACROSS AMERICA - a competition which asked independent filmmakers to submit entries related to cross-country adventures - will be unveiled at the San Francisco RESFEST in a program of road movie shorts entitled "Drive Me Crazy." In addition, Intel will sponsor a special panel discussion at the Los Angeles RESFEST entitled "Making Road Movies," at which filmmakers will reveal the trials and tribulations of their 10-day cross-country filmmaking odysseys. Also slated for RESFEST Los Angeles is an after party with award-winning commercial and music video directorial collective TRAKTOR.

The London RESFEST will feature the premiere of the Film Council's Viro shorts - micro-movies to be distributed instantly via email. RES has also been invited to curate innovative moving image work for two prestigious events held this fall at the Villette Numerique in Paris and Art Futura in Barcelona.

-- Feature Films: RESFEST 2002 will showcase two stunning and

diverse feature films: BREATH CONTROL and FULLTIME KILLER.

BREATH CONTROL is a 75-minute documentary on musicians that

use their voice as their only instrument. The piece features

pioneering "beat box" musicians Doug E., Fresh, Biz Markle and

The Fat Boys. FULLTIME KILLER is a 100-minute Hong Kong action

film, which was selected as Hong Kong's official Academy

submission this year. The innovative film pushes the

boundaries of this genre with offbeat characters, over-the-top

fight sequences and innumerable plot twists, which keep

audiences on the edge of their seats.

-- Short Films Screened by Theme: The RESFEST 2002 Shorts Program

will showcase over 60 shorts from digital storytellers around

the world in seven themed programs. Themes for 2002 include:

"State of the Art" featuring Bob Sabiston's YARD and Todd

Lincoln's LEAVE LUCK TO HEAVEN; "Bad Day" featuring Terry

Rietta's CRANK CALLS and Phil Mulloy's INVASION; "Drive Me

Crazy" featuring Robert Bradbrook's HOME ROAD MOVIES and Blue

Sources' 60 MILES PER HOUR; "By Design" featuring work from

H5, Bill McMullen and Ryan McGuiness; "Director's Club"

featuring the U.S. premiere of Spike Jonze's WHAT'S UP,

FATLIP? and Mike Mill's rarely seen HAIR, SHOES, LOVE AND

HONESTY; "In the Bedroom" featuring Greg Pak's ALL AMATEUR

ECTASY and Naomi Uman's REMOVED; and "True Stories" featuring

the world premiere of Stefan Nadelman's TERMINAL BAR and Jon

Rubin's SO MANY WOMEN, SO LITTLE HAIR. Each program includes

seven to thirteen shorts.

-- Music Videos: Two RESFEST 2002 programs will focus on music

videos: "Videos That Rock" and "Cinema Electronica." "Videos

That Rock" will celebrate directors who translate guitar and

vocal energy into some other form and will feature AGENDA

SUICIDE by The Faint; DROP (DO IT AGAIN) by Cornelius;

EXPLOSION by Cube Juice and many others. "Cinema Electronica"

will look at the dynamic electronic music videos of the past

year and will feature DESTINY by Zero 7; EYE FOR AN EYE by

Unkle; PAGAN POETRY by Bjork and much more.

-- Chris Cunningham Retrospective: Poised to be a major crowd

attraction, RESFEST 2002 will include a special screening

retrospective of the works of Chris Cunningham, who is known

for his direction of provocative and award-winning videos for

Aphex Twin, Madonna, Portishead and Leftfield. The collection

to be screened was hand picked by Cunningham and includes his

best videos, as well as rare short films FLEX and MONKEY

DRUMMER - never before exhibited in the U.S. Chris Cunningham

is also on the cover of the September/October issue of RES

Magazine, which serves as the official RESFEST festival guide.

-- DV Filmmaking Seminar: Experts in DV filmmaking will discuss

the secrets of digital cinematography, transferring to film,

and editing on the desktop using 24P footage at RESFEST 2002

locations. The discussion will also cover NSTC vs. PAL format,

30i vs 24P and more.
