RESERVES READY AND ABLE.


SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Deputy Artie Thompson has his duffle bag ready, a picture of his wife and 2-year-old daughter tucked in his pocket, and has been standing close to the telephone waiting for the call.

Thompson is a reserve with the Army National Guard and one of 35,000 to 50,000 military reserves awaiting the presidential order that would put them into action.

``I heard the news and I have been waiting for the call,'' said Thompson, also an 18-year veteran with the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  sheriff's station.

Thompson has been a reserve for 20 years starting in Massachusetts and continuing after he moved to California.

``If they needed us we would be there right now,'' Thompson said. ``I'll be proud to serve for my country.''

Thompson's reserve partner and fellow sheriff's deputy is also on standby.

But both men had heard the talks of war and know that more serious work may be ahead.

``That could be the possibility down the road,'' Chinery said. ``The Air Force trains us to handle these types of things. Obviously that's what we volunteered for.''

Both men work out of the base at Channel Islands and have trained to serve as ground support.

It was through Thompson that Chinery, 40, of Santa Clarita learned of the reserves and during Desert Storm he took a leave of absence and attended boot camp Software from Apple that enables an Intel x86-based Macintosh to host the Windows XP operating system. Boot Camp is used to divide the hard disk into Windows and Mac partitions, to install the necessary drivers and to create a dual boot environment. .

Thompson said that he was in part inspired to join the National Guard by his older brother who was in the U.S. Army and partly to show his pride for his country.

``It was a patriotic thing,'' Thompson said. ``It makes you proud to be American.''
