The two freshmen, who are cadets in the school's new police academy magnet program, will be learning to gather evidence at a crime scene, keep computerized records and build the physical strength police work demands.

And although neither is dead-set on a life in law enforcement, their interest bodes well for a police department striving to reflect Los Angeles' changing ethnic make-up.

``It's getting more and more difficult to recruit people into the police department, especially people who are bilingual, or women,'' said Roberta Weintraub, executive director of the police magnet program. ``Our philosophy is, Start 'em young.''

Weintraub and a platoon of public officials will gather this morning to celebrate the opening of Reseda High School's police program, the fifth in Los Angeles.

For the 40 Reseda students already enrolled, the program offers both training and discipline. They must maintain C averages, avoid drugs and alcohol, snap to attention in the presence of adults and perform at least 20 hours of community service each year.

But the challenge of living up to a higher standard than their peers is attractive to some cadets.

``I didn't want to just take regular classes,'' said Salazar, 15. ``I would have been bored.''

The school district's Junior Police Academy Program began in 1996 with $250,000 in seed money from 20th Century Insurance and now includes 500 students. The academies are not cheap. Each costs about $1 million to create, with the money coming from private donations and government grants, Weintraub said.

In spite of the expense, the program has drawn national attention. Administrators from a Brooklyn, N.Y., high school toured Reseda Thursday, looking for Looking for

High School, stared in amazement at the 26 top-of-the-line computers in the Reseda police magnet's new lab.

``This is fantastic,'' she muttered before peppering Reseda officials with questions.

While cadets use top-line equipment - including a new weight room that could put most health clubs to shame - such perks had little effect on their decision to join. Some said they signed on to the program out of interest in the classes, some because their parents pushed them into it.

But several said Thursday that getting a taste of police work has sparked their interest in a career.

Officer Mark Horton, who teaches physical education to the Reseda cadets, said the program allows police to reach young people at an age when some begin to have run-ins with the law.

``I feel like I'm making an impact with a large group of kids instead of just going down to Blythe Street and arresting some gang members,'' he said.
