RESEDA HEADS FOE OFF AT THE PASS : RESEDA 7 MAN. ARTS 0.Byline: Gerry Gittelson Daily News Staff Writer Considering Reseda High's relentless power-running attack, the defense probably doesn't practice much against the pass. But the games are a different story. Gerard Jones Gerard Jones is an American writer, born July 10, 1957 in Cut Bank, Montana, raised in Los Gatos and Gilroy, California. Acietuno came in with 28 touchdown passes but could not rally the Toilers (6-7) past Reseda's 25-yard line. ``I applaud (Jones) on his game,'' Manual Arts lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:

Reseda's Joe Looney ran for 156 yards on 24 carries. He did not score but did a good job keeping the ball away from Manual Arts. Looney now has 1,122 yards. ``Ball control was the difference in the game,'' Looney said. The Toilers converted just two third downs. ``We were flat,'' co-coach Vincent Smith said. McKnight was 4 of 7 for 76 yards, a typical effort for quarterback who has taken on the personality of his team: functional but not flashy. ``We've come a long way,'' he said. ``We had our breakdowns in the beginning season, but all the captains got together a long time and we talked. Right now I think we're real good. We have a lot of talent on this team.'' Reseda started the season 1-3, partly due to injuries, as Looney and McNight both missed early action. But both are healthy. The Regents won the 3A title in 1995. ``I'm so proud of these kids I could burst,'' Schaeffer said. ``They're great kids. It hasn't just been about focus. These kids really believe. ``We totally shut out their quarterback who had 28 touchdown passes coming in. That is remarkable.'' The last two games have seen Reseda allow just 11 completions in 45 attempts - and seven points. Schaeffer was especially happy with Jones. ``Gerard has come as far as anybody,'' Schaeffer said. ``At the beginning of the season he was a very marginal football player, but tonight he was big. And he was playing with a sore shoulder.'' The Regents were not perfect. Looney lost two fumbles in the first half, but the defense never stopped coming through. Manual Arts was held to 157 yards. Edwin Garcia had 59 yards in 12 carries. ``Basically Reseda was the better team,'' linebacker Mingo Brown of Manual Arts said. |
