RESEDA CHOSEN TO RECEIVE FEDERAL TRANSIT GRANT : MONEY EARMARKED FOR BUS STOPS, TREES.

Allocating a second round of federal grants to improve transit corridors, Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  on Monday announced that Reseda and four other areas of the city would participate in the the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Neighborhood Investment program.

``This is an effort (for) neighborhoods to decide what they need and to make improvements,'' Mayor Richard Riordan said in announcing the grants at a news conference outside Canter's restaurant in the Fairfax area.

``Neither I, in my office, or the council members can solve your problems. You have to solve the problems. What we can do is empower you.''

In addition to Reseda, grants of $300,000 each were announced for the Fairfax area, Pico-Union area and the Vernon-Central Los Angeles area.

Specific projects for the Reseda area have yet to be defined, but will be developed with a community board, said Ken Bernstein, deputy to Councilwoman Laura Chick chick

``We expect most of this to be concentrated in the Reseda Boulevard-Sherman Way area, and we're looking mostly at physical improvements,'' Bernstein said.
