RESEARCH FRONTIERS SIGNS REAR-VIEW MIRROR LICENSE AGREEMENT
 WITH LARGE EUROPEAN GLASS FIRM
WOODBURY, N.Y., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Research Frontiers Incorporated (NASDAQ: REFR, REFRW; BSE: RFR, RFRW) announced today that the company has signed a license agreement with Glaverbel, S.A., one of Europe's largest manufacturers of flat glass and mirrors, covering the manufacture and sale in Europe of automotive vehicle rear-view mirrors using Research Frontiers' variable light transmission technology.
"Automatically self-dimmable rear-view mirrors based on Research Frontiers' fluid suspension technology, if successfully commercialized by Glaverbel, would compete against electrochromic rear-view mirrors now being sold by Gentex Corporation and others in a rapidly growing market for self-dimmable automotive mirrors," Robert L. Saxe, Frontiers' president, explained.
Self-dimmable mirrors automatically darken themselves to reduce glare and eyestrain caused by the headlights of a car approaching a driver from the rear.
"Research Frontiers' fluid suspension mirror has the important advantage of darkening itself in about one second or less, whereas electrochromic mirrors currently require up to seven seconds to fully darken. The Research Frontiers type mirror may also cost significantly less to manufacture," Saxe noted.
Under the license agreement, Glaverbel will pay Research Frontiers 5 percent of net sales of licensed products and a minimum annual royalty of $125,000. Glaverbel also has the option through June 30, 1993, to make the license worldwide, in which case the minimum annual royalty will rise over a two-year period to $312,500.
Research Frontiers estimates that 1992 worldwide sales of self- dimmable automotive rear-view mirrors will be about a million units, and that annual worldwide sales could reach at least 10 to 15 million units within ten years, if current trends continue, according to Saxe.
Glaverbel, S.A., a Belgian corporation, is a member of the Glaverbel Group, the third largest manufacturer of flat glass in Europe. The Glaverbel Group employs 10,000 people worldwide and had 1991 revenues of 30 billion Belgian francs (approximately US$874 million). Glaverbel is controlled by Asahi Glass Company Ltd., the largest flat glass manufacturer in Japan and the world's leading manufacturer of automotive glass.
