One person was killed and three others were left hurt and stranded on the side of a steep cliff when their vehicle plunged off a winding mountain road Friday.

In a daring operation, a rescue team plucked the injured from the cliff more than 100 feet below Angeles Crest Highway The Angeles Crest Highway is a two-lane (one lane of travel in each direction) segment of California State Route 2 in the United States. The road is 66 miles in length, with its western terminus at the intersection at Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge and its eastern  in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los , said Jim Crawford, a county Fire Department spokesman.

Some of the victims apparently were ejected or jumped as the car dropped about 250 feet. Two of the victims were about 100 feet up the cliff from where the crumpled crum·ple

A 40-year-old female was found dead by rescue workers. Two females, 8 and 25, were taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, and a 35-year-old male was transported to County-USC Medical Center, said Fire Department dispatch supervisor Clyde Taylor.

One person originally thought to be dead by rescuers was alive, and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene to transport the victim to a hospital.

The three survivors all were listed in critical condition at area hospitals, said sheriff's Deputy Benita Nichol. Their identities were not released.

A firefighter struck in the chest by a large falling rock was taken to a Pasadena hospital. His condition was not immediately known, said Fire Department dispatcher Software that determines what pending tasks should be done next and assigns the available resources to accomplish it. The daring rescues were telecast on live television as some paramedics rappelled from the cliff top and others were lowered by rope from a helicopter hovering overhead.

The Fire Department received a call reporting the accident at 4:49 p.m., Crawford said.
