RESCUE WRECKIN' CREW FIREFIGHTERS USE CONDEMNED HOTEL TO TRAIN.

LANCASTER - Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County firefighters are practicing their skills on a low-income hotel that is slated for demolition.

``It's not very often we get a real building to practice our techniques on,'' said Fire Capt. Joel Harrison.

City officials are letting firefighters practice on the hotel before it is torn down, expected to occur in two or three weeks.

Fire officials say they have regular training facilities, but they jump at the chance to use a real building.

``It just adds a lot more realism,'' said Fire Capt. Larry Tucker, who organized the training sessions.

The hotel won't be set on fire during the training, but a portable smoke machine is being used.

 are taking part in the training, which started Monday.

City officials said they bought the 43-room, 11,630-square-foot hotel on Jackman Street because it was in poor shape and seemed to be a blight blight, general term for any sudden and severe plant disease or for the agent that causes it. The term is now applied chiefly to diseases caused by bacteria (e.g., bean blights and fire blight of fruit trees), viruses (e.g., soybean bud blight), fungi (e.g.  and a magnet for crime downtown.
