 for second place.

NBC won the week of June 24-30 with an 8.2 rating and a 16 percent share of the TV audience, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday. CBS, third-ranked for the season, had a 7.0 rating and a 14 share, just ahead of ABC's 6.9 rating and 14 share. Fox Broadcasting Co. earned a 4.6 rating and a 9 share.

A rating point equals 959,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's 95.9 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use TV sets tuned to a particular program.

Many viewers abandoned rerun-filled network TV for summer's distractions. And the four major networks accounted for just 53 percent of the remaining TV audience, 10 percent below their season-to-date average.

The networks' newsmagazines got their usual seasonal boost from being first-run shows. ABC's ``20/20,'' with Barbara Walters' interview of parent-murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez, was No. 2. CBS' ``60 Minutes'' was fifth for the week, and Wednesday's edition of ``Dateline NBC'' was No. 10.

Among the evening news broadcasts, NBC's ``Nightly News'' moved within two-tenths of a rating point of ABC's No. 1 ``World News Tonight.''

ABC's newscast newscast

 had a 7.4 rating and a 17 share; NBC's a 7.2 rating and a 17 share, and CBS' ``Evening News'' a 5.9 rating and a 14 share.
