REPUBLICANS MAKE SWEEP OF AREA RACES MCKEON BACK FOR 5TH TERM.

Byline: Heather MacDonald Staff Writer

NEWHALL - Like most of the country, when U.S. Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon went to bed late Tuesday night, he was sure Texas Gov. George W. Bush had won the presidency.

But when he woke up Wednesday morning, after gliding to his fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives over Democratic challenger Sid Gold, he wasn't sure what had happened.

``All I know is that I'm headed back to Washington,'' McKeon said Wednesday from his Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  office in Newhall. ``That's all that's certain, though.''

McKeon, who said he was confident Bush would be declared the winner by the thinnest of margins in Florida after Wednesday's recount, said he hoped Vice President Al Gore Noun 1. Al Gore - Vice President of the United States under Bill Clinton (born in 1948)

McKeon said he paid more attention to the back-and-forth presidential race than to his own race, which was never in doubt.

State Sen. William J. ``Pete'' Knight also held on to his seat, defeating Democrat Richard Lott, Libertarian John R. Gibson and Natural Law Party candidate Douglas R. Walack in the 17th District.

In the 34th Assembly District, which covers eastern Kern County and the Victorville area, Tehachapi Republican Phil Wyman beat Victorville Democrat Robert Conaway. The victory means a return to Sacramento for Wyman, who represented the Antelope Valley there for 16 years until his Senate district was shifted into a Democratic area of the San Joaquin Valley Noun 1. ``I don't see how it gets much tougher,'' McKeon said. ``It's been really tough this past year.''

McKeon pledged to work with his Democratic counterparts to strengthen America's armed forces, improve public education and pass a tax cut.
