Republican National Committee on Friday picked Jim Nicholson, a little-known party veteran from Colorado, to lead its drive to win back the White House.

Nicholson, 58, emerged as the consensus candidate for party chairman in six ballots after two better-known contenders, former New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  Gov. Steve Merrill and David Norcross, the national committee's chief counsel, could not muster majorities among the 164 voting party members.

A real estate developer who served as an Army Ranger in Vietnam, Nicholson describes himself as a solid conservative. But he is something of a blank slate in national politics, and his selection does not signal any ideological shift.

Instead, as other contenders sometimes times turned nasty, Nicholson benefited from his easy-going eas·y·go·ing also eas·y-go·ing

``The fact that I ran a positive campaign, talking about my political vision and values proved to be decisive in the end,'' Nicholson told the party members meeting here after he was handed the gavel gavel

Nicholson could find himself playing an important role defending House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is caught up in the inquiries into his ethics. He will also play a fundamental role in guiding the party's efforts to defend its majorities on Capitol Hill and among governors in the 1998 midterm elections.

In addition, Nicholson will be central in orchestrating the party's blueprint to wrest wrest

But some party members said they were worried that Nicholson was not as polished on television as Barbour and might not have the background on issues to work as closely with congressional leaders as did Barbour.
