The AVRA announced its endorsements of incumbent Sue Stokka and challenger Wayne Woodhall. The league's membership later voted to endorse incumbents Steve Landaker and Bill Olenick and challenger Brett Nelson.

``They were the most qualified people for the job,'' said Lawrence Hales, the league's president-elect and membership director. ``We are just two very different groups. They (AVRA members) are conservative. We are moderate. We are a lot easier to get along with.''

The league was formed seven years ago and has about 60 members, Hales said. The assembly was formed in the 1970s and has more than 100 members, according to according to

Antelope Valley Republican Assembly leaders said they examined candidates' records on supporting local control of public schools, Judeo-Christian values and patriotism, as well as opposing the teacher training course, called CLAD, on Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development.
