``He is alone and isolated, because his life is on the sea,'' said Matyan, an immigrant of Armenian heritage now living in Burbank. ``Because he travels, he doesn't have a soil. He's like Armenians. We immigrate im·mi·grate

The work impressed state Sen. Adam Schiff

Adam B. Schiff (born June 20 1960) is an American politician. He first served in the California State Senate.
, D-Pasadena, who has chosen the painting to represent his 21st district in the Senate's second Contemporary California Art Collection.

``Vasken Matyan is a wonderfully gifted artist,'' said Schiff, chairman of the state Legislature's Joint Committee on the Arts. ``His remarkable paintings should be an inspiration to young artists everywhere.''

Each senator was asked to select an artist from his or her district to participate in the exhibit, which will hang in the Capitol for the year.

Schiff chose ``At the Bar,'' with its lone sailor wearing a blue watch cap against a vibrant yellow and rust-colored background.

``I just thought it was a very expressive portrait of this sailor,'' Schiff said. ``There's something very human about the qualities in his face . . . that captures the human spirit. There's a beautiful and melancholy Melancholy

Matyan said in this painting, as with all his work, he tries to express the human character, behavior and feelings.

Matyan came to the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. He is close to his family, and to the large Armenian community in the Glendale-Burbank area.

Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, Matyan said his earliest sketches were of the tanks and ambulances he could see passing by his balcony. There were other, more life-affirming, images that also influenced the budding budding, type of grafting in which a plant bud is inserted under the bark of the stock (usually not more than a year old). It is best done when the bark will peel easily and the buds are mature, as in spring, late summer, or early autumn.  artist.

``My father was a poet who loved art. There were always art books around the house to look at, with paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne and Picasso,'' said Matyan, who was also influenced by Renaissance art.

``I love the works of the old masters with paintings of angels flying around,'' he said. ``In this material world, you can't find spiritual art that much.''

Matyan said he ``wants to create wonderful things and make people happy,'' with his art.

Schiff believes Matyan does that. The senator asked his staff to bring the best artwork from throughout the 800,000-people strong 21st District, which includes Burbank, Glendale, La Crescenta, Pasadena, Tujunga, San Marino San Marino, city, United States

and portions of Los Feliz and Silver Lake.

``We had many to choose from, but we just fell in love with it,'' Schiff said of Matyan's portrait. ``It reminded me a little of Picasso's work before it got too abstract.''

The senator said anyone who would like to see the exhibit during a visit to Sacramento can call his office at (916) 445-5976, and his staff will arrange it.

``It was an honor to be chosen by a senator,'' said Matyan, who works as a jeweler to help support his art.
