Most recently, Collins was responsible for overseeing the successful merger of Summit Bancorp into FleetBoston while preserving market share and customer base. Prior to the 2001 merger, Collins had been vice chairman of Summit Bancorp. He was a member of the board of directors of Summit Bancorp and its predecessor, UJB Financial Corp. from 1986 to 2001.

At Summit, Collins was responsible for corporate planning, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations and the company's investment portfolio. He chaired the corporation's asset/liability committee and served as chairman of UJB Financial Services Corp., which provided data processing and operational support to Summit.

Earlier, he had been with Commercial Trust and had served as chairman, CEO and president of its parent company, Commercial Bancshares, a New Jersey-based bank holding company. Summit Bancorp acquired Commercial Bancshares in 1986.
