"Using this minimally invasive procedure Minimally invasive surgical procedures avoid open invasive surgery in favor of closed or local surgery with less trauma. These procedures involve use of laparoscopic devices and remote-control manipulation of instruments with indirect observation of the surgical field through an , we can achieve the same excellent long lasting results as with bypass surgery, with far less trauma, physically and emotionally for the patient," explains Dr. Vassiliades, director of the cardiac surgery program at Pensacola Heart Institute and cardiothoracic cardiothoracic /car·dio·tho·rac·ic/ (-thah-ras´ik) pertaining to the heart and the thorax.

surgeon at Sacred Heart. "Patients go into surgery with far less anxiety about the procedure, and they return to normal activity in 2 weeks instead of 2 months."
-- This new coronary bypass procedure is now available as an effective
alternative to open heart surgery.

-- The surgeon uses the robotic technology to perform the bypass, on a beating
heart, through an incision less than 2 inches.

-- This "Endo-ACAB" technique uses smaller incisions to minimize patient trauma
and scarring, and avoids the significant pain associated with open heart
surgery. This minimally invasive procedure eliminates the two greatest sources
of patient trauma associated with conventional heart surgery: the large
incision in the chest (sternotomy) and the use of the heart lung machine.

-- To date more than 1,500 successful endoscopic bypass procedures have been
performed on patients by leading cardiac surgeons around the world -- with
compelling results.

-- Dr. Vassiliades has completed one of the largest Endo-ACAB series with more
than 400 procedures.

On February 13th, Dr. Vassiliades made medical history when he used a robotic system to perform a critical step in bypass surgery completely by remote control, as part of an FDA FDA
