REPAIR WILL CLOSE MADERA.

Byline: Angie Valencia-Martinez Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - Motorists traveling Madera Road will have to cope with lane closures the next five weeks, while crews repair a leak to Ventura County's main water pipeline, officials said.

One lane in each direction will be closed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily near Highway 118, and left-turn lanes onto Aristotle Street and Moreland Road will be closed, officials said.

``At this point, our focus is on repairing the pipeline and restoring the overlying overlying

street to minimize disruption to area residents, businesses and commuters. Then we will fully assess the cause of the line break,'' said Donald Kendall, general manager of the Calleguas Municipal Water District.

Officials weren't able to say what caused the rupture rupture, in medicine: see hernia.  in the 78-inch-diameter pipeline, capable of carrying about 114,000 gallons of water per minute between Simi Valley and Oxnard. Officials detected the leak earlier this month when water was seen seeping seep

``It's a major pipeline (and) obviously an urgent issue,'' said Eric Bergh, resource manager for the water district.

The repair project will not affect the district's ability to provide water because the pipe is one of two carrying water from the California Aqueduct The California Aqueduct is a 444 mile (715 km)-long[1] aqueduct in the United States that carries water from Northern California to Southern California.  for distribution to customers in Ventura County.

The cost to repair the pipeline has been estimated at about $100,000, Kendall said. Officials say there was a ``negligible'' amount of water lost and it was nowhere near the amount of water lost five years ago when the same pipeline caused a major rupture in the road. The 150-foot-long rupture is part of 3,000 feet of pipeline in western Simi Valley that was reinforced with a steel liner in 2000 because it showed signs of stress.
