REPAIR PACT WILL ENABLE ADOBE TO REOPEN.

Byline: Terry Kanakri Daily News Staff Writer

One of Simi Valley's most cherished historical buildings will soon reopen to the public, thanks to the park district approving a contract to make earthquake repairs, officials said Tuesday.

The Simi Adobe/Strathearn Victorian Home has been closed since the Jan. 17, 1994 Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. , when the temblor caused major damage to the structure, including a chimney that crashed through the roof.

The repairs had been put on hold because the district didn't have the money.

The Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Recreation and Park District, which owns the Robert P. Strathearn Historical Park and Museum, where the historical building is located, has awarded a $130,647 contract to DTEC DTEC Department of Technical and Economic Cooperation (Thailand)

Ed Hayduk, the park district's planning and development administrator, said repair work is scheduled to begin early June and should be completed in November, when the building should reopen to the public.

of the park and we really feel that attendance has been down due to the closure of this building,'' Smith said. ``Secondly, this is a historical landmark in Simi Valley that was heavily damaged by the quake, and we're looking forward to having it repaired because of its historical significance.''

Preserving the historical building, the focal point of Strathearn Historical Park and Museum, has been a priority of the Simi Valley Historical Society for a long time. Finding the money to pay for the repair costs has been a major challenge for the Park District, which operates the historical park.
