Convention President Willie Givens said the endorsement doesn't necessarily mean the group supports Gov. David Beasley's proposal. Beasley wants to move the flag to a Confederate monument on the Statehouse grounds.

The statement the African-American Baptists endorsed, written by the South Carolina Christian Action Council, says the flag should be moved ``to a more appropriate location.''

It also says the religious leaders aim to ``represent the voices of respect, honor, reconciliation and healing.''
